Short, steep and unforgettable: a climb to 450m on Yr Eifl to one of the best-preserved Iron Age hill forts in Britain. Tre’r Ceiri — “town of the giants” — holds the remains of more than 150 stone roundhouses inside ramparts still standing 3.5 metres high, occupied from around 200 BCE through the Roman period. On a clear day the 360° view takes in the whole peninsula, Anglesey and the peaks of Eryri.
Need to know: rocky scree and steep, uneven ground — boots essential, not suitable for mobility issues and best for ages 10+. Frequently windy; icy in winter (April–October recommended). Please don’t climb on the ancient walls. Caffi Meinir at Nant Gwrtheyrn (2km) does a well-earned Welsh cake afterwards. Dogs on leads.
