Whistling Sands (Porthor) Circular Walk

4.5 miles · 2–2.5 hours · Moderate · Park: NT car park (LL53 8LH)

Porthor is one of only a handful of beaches in the world where the sand audibly squeaks — but only when it’s dry, so pick your day (our live weather helps). From the National Trust car park drop to the beach, then follow the coast path south-west over the twin headlands of Dinas Bach and Dinas Fawr — wild, flower-covered in early summer, with seals often hauled out below — before looping back inland.

Need to know: the descent to the beach is steep (not suitable for mobility issues). Seasonal café on the beach; nothing else en route, so carry water. Dogs on leads for the livestock sections. The whistle works best on warm, dry afternoons — drag your feet flat across the dry sand above the tideline.
